Corner Sofa vs. Straight Sofa: Which Should You Choose?

It's the question every sofa buyer eventually faces: should I go for a corner sofa or a straight sofa? Both have their merits, and the right answer depends on your room, your lifestyle, and how you like to use your living space. Here's everything you need to know.

The Case for Corner Sofas

Corner sofas — also called L-shaped sofas — are the most popular choice in the UK, and for good reason. They offer significantly more seating than a straight sofa of comparable price, and they naturally define the seating area within a room.

In open-plan living spaces, a corner sofa acts as a room divider, creating a clear boundary between the living area and the kitchen or dining zone without the need for walls or screens. This is particularly valuable in modern new-build homes where open-plan layouts are the norm.

Corner sofas also tend to feel more sociable — everyone faces inward, making conversation easier. And for families, the extra length means there's always room for everyone to stretch out.

Best for: Open-plan living, large families, rooms with a corner that needs filling, anyone who wants maximum seating without multiple pieces of furniture.

The Case for Straight Sofas

Straight sofas are more versatile than they're often given credit for. In a narrower room, a straight sofa placed against a wall opens up significantly more floor space than a corner configuration. They're also easier to move — both within a room and when you're changing homes.

A straight sofa paired with an armchair (or two) creates a classic, balanced living room arrangement that works in almost any space. It also gives you more flexibility to rearrange the room over time, which is something many homeowners underestimate the value of.

Best for: Narrower rooms, renters who move frequently, those who prefer a classic arrangement, rooms where a corner would block natural light or walkways.

Our Recommendation

If your room is 4m × 4m or larger and you have a corner that isn't being used, a corner sofa will transform your living room. If your room is narrower, or you're not sure how long you'll be in the property, a straight sofa gives you more flexibility.

The good news is that with Sofa Modular's modular system, you're not locked in. Our sofas can be reconfigured — so you can start with a straight sofa and add a chaise or corner unit later as your needs change.
